WATERCOLOURS

Show Jumping

Over the years I have painted many horses, mostly to commission. The leaping horse though is by far my favourite. Sheer power and grace all come together in an instant as this giant of an animal leaves the ground as if it were weightless.

The Rendezvous Cafe

A French name for a very English cafe. I loved the quality of light that filled this scene. That and the opportunity to include a Van Gogh in one of my paintings.

Unproductive Facility

This is a study of the disused Royal Doulton factory in Burslem, Stoke on Trent. The city of my birth was once the proud manufacturer of the finest ceramics in the world. Sadly the late twentieth century saw globalisation bring all this to an end and this painting is my memorial to all that has gone and everything that has gone with it.

The Scarborough Waffle Shop

I have many happy memories of the waffle shop on Scarborough’s North Bay. As a child it would be a real holiday treat to end the day with a waffle covered in lashings of cream and maple syrup. As an adult it was something to pass on to my son. Sadly it has now gone the way of all things. This painting depicts my son Julian looking at the boarded-up shop just before it was demolished.

Costa Crewe

I have always loved cafes. Surrounded by strangers going about their lives, meeting with their friends, maybe their lovers, I can drift away into a world of ideas and possibilities. I have had most of my best ideas in cafes. I love the surfaces, the reflections, the extreme perspective. I could happily spend my entire life just traveling the world painting cafes.

Amelia Painting

I love to paint people intently concentrating on being creative. This is Amelia on a trip to the Gladstone Pottery Museum in Stoke on Trent, trying her hand at ceramic decoration.

Under the Bridge

The canals were once the motorways of the industrial revolution. Those days are long gone and where there once were bustling factories are now ring roads under which the still waters of the canals still meander. Under these bridges are these desolate echoing spaces, green and grey with a million receding memories.

The Bivy

There is a peace and tranquility in this scene that belies the freezing cold reality.

PLEIN AIR PAINTINGS.

Daffodils in Lyme Valley

Spring has tentatively arrived, although shortly after I packed away it hailed! While I was painting this scene though it was warm and sunny, if a little breezy. This is the view over Lyme Brook from just by Newcastle Town Football Club.

Keele Woods

Painting this I learned a very important lesson about plein air painting. Always remember to look behind you before stepping back to size up a scene. I didn’t and fell flat on my back in a bog! Was really difficult standing up again as I had my backpack on – must have looked hilarious – like something off You’ve Been Framed. But hey I carried on and completed this 8×10 oil standing in the aforesaid bog! Nobody can say I’m not prepared to suffer  for my art!
